How to Get Your Cat Not To Fear Sounds

If you find that your cat is alarmed when they hear particular sounds don’t be too surprise as many cats have this problem. This can be the sound of a lawnmower, doorbell, or a vacuum. It could be that your cat upon hearing these sounds fear something stressful is about to happen. Some sounds may happen unexpectedly. No matter the source of the sound, because cats are usually anxious and fearful, they are not likely to recover from the scare quickly. Here are some tips on how to get your cat not to fear sounds.

Before you begin it is best to make sure that your cat has a “safe room” that they can go to. This will help in stopping their anxious behaviour from being reinforced. Make this “safe room” somewhere out of the way so that disturbing sounds cannot be clearly heard by your cat.

Start by exposing your cat to a particular noise and increase or decrease the volume of the sound gradually. Do this over a number of sessions until your cat is able to stay totally relaxed when they hear the sound at its normal volume. You can reward your cat each time he responds in the manner you desire. For each specific sound you will need to work with them separately.

You can also assist your cat’s learning how to handle fearful noises by doing your best to protect them from hearing the sound. So if you are about to vacuum you can take your cat away from where you will be working so that he does no hear the sound. For other sounds what you can do is to turn them down a notch so that it is not as loud to your cat.

Keep in mind that the process will take some time so you will need to be very patient but consistent.

While I am here, I was wondering if any of aur readers had any leads on permanent vet jobs, a very good friend of mine has just received her qualifications and is looking for a position. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
