Your Pregnant Dog: What She Should Eat

Your dog’s diet when she is pregnant is very important for her health as well as for the health of her pups. Many dog owners are unaware of what to feed their dog when she is pregnant. Here is some tips on how and what to feed your dog while she is pregnant, if you are not sure than anyone working vet nurse jobs are trained in this and should know, so you should get an answer fairly quicky if you call your local vet.

1. Protein. Protein is essential for your pregnant dog. Although most canned and dry dog foods have meat in it, you should always choose a dog food that lists meat as the number one ingredient. This way, your dog is getting the utmost amount of protein in her diet. Consider adding a hard-boiled egg to her daily diet.

2. High quality meat. Many dog food brands contain a high amount of meat by-products. While your dog is pregnant, you should avoid feeding your dog the “cheap stuff”. Buy high quality dog foods and spare no expense. These are much more nutritious.

3. Offer plenty of water. Pregnant dogs will desire a higher quantity of water, more water than you are used to from your dog. But this is normal; a pregnant dog requires a constantly full water dish.

4. Avoid the temptation to give her more calcium. A pregnant dog produces an ample amount of calcium on her own. By giving her more calcium (supplements, milk, cheese, etc.) may cause more damage than good. Most notably, if you give your pregnant dog too much calcium, she may develop high blood pressure.

5. Space out your feedings. Make sure you feed your dog at greater intervals than normal. This may make her upset, but this is essential for her digestion and for the health of her pups.

These are general guidelines for feeding your pregnant dog and they should only be considered after consulting with your veterinarian. Weekly or bi-weekly appointments with your vet will help ensure that your dog’s pregnancy is going smoothly.
